Supersymmetry, Naturalness and the Landscape *

چکیده
We argue that the study of the statistics of the landscape of string vacua provides the first potentially predictive – and also falsifiable – framework for string theory. The question of whether the theory does or does not predict low energy supersym-metry breaking may well be the most accessible to analysis. We argue that low energy – possibly very low energy – supersymmetry breaking is likely to emerge, and enumerate questions which must be answered in order to make a definitive prediction.

Naturalness and the Landscape
In this paper I review some arguments of Douglas and myself concerning the concept of naturalness in string theory. I explain why the usual argument for low energy supersymmetry do not apply in this context. An incorrect argument in [7] is corrected. The statistical properties of the Landscape of vacua are strongly biased against low energy supersymmetry.

Landscape ecology as a modern interdisciplinary science offers new concepts, theories, and methods for land evaluation and management. One main part of landscape ecology is describing patterns in the landscape and interpreting the ecological effects of these patterns on flora, fauna, flow of energy and materials. Landscape studies require methods to identify and quantify spatial patterns of lan...
متن کاملPredictive Supersymmetry from Criticality
Motivated by the absence of any direct signal of new physics so far, we present a simple supersymmetric model in which the up-type Higgs mass-squared parameter m2Hu crosses zero at a scale close to the weak scale. Such a theory may be motivated either by the conventional naturalness picture or by the landscape picture with certain assumptions on prior probability distributions of parameters. Th...
متن کاملNaturally Nonminimal Supersymmetry
We consider the bounds imposed by naturalness on the masses of superpartners for arbitrary points in nonminimal supersymmetric extensions of the standard model and for arbitrary messenger scales. We discuss appropriate measures of naturalness and the status of nonminimal supersymmetry in the light of recent experimental results.
